The Artists

Bringing together two Toronto artists, this exhibition journeys into distant landscapes, where light and shadow ignite the senses and allow us to experience life with heightened awareness and inspiration. This wonderment helps to reveal the genuine beauty of living life in the moment.

KQEK.com: ArtScopeTO 01: The Urban Gallery + Interviews with Annie Mandlsohn & Robert J. Brodey
including audio interviews with Urban Gallery curator Allen Shugar and the artists.

Urban Gallery Manager Calvin Hambrook has created a deep space in the 400 Queen Street East location to showcase the works of local and visiting artists, of which selected art is curated, mounted, and displayed by curator Allen Shugar.

What makes the Urban Gallery quite unique is its open application system, in which artists can approach the gallery, rent the space for a month as a solo or pair of artists or larger group (and enjoy the launch party with guests and fabulous nosh from UrbanSource Catering next door, of which Calvin Hambrook is part owner), and receive commission-free proceeds from the sale of their artworks – a great manoeuver to get one’s foot in the door of the art world, and test the waters of the public and art aficionados.

From October 6 to October 29, Urban Gallery is hosting the mixed media works of Annie Mandlsohn and photographer Robert J. Brodey and I’ve posted a short video which also contains comments from curator Shugar and the artists on specific aspects of their work...

If there’s a common thread to the work of Mandlsohn and Brodey, it’s their ability to escape from the busy city environs by exploring aspects of the world outside of Toronto, and bringing the results of their creative travels home in mediums that are visually striking, tactile, and enriching.

EXHIBITION DATES NOVEMBER 5-30 2013

This joint exhibition by two artists explores both our intuitive connections to nature, culture, and landscape as well as the spectrum of our longing for faraway places, revealing images remote and intimate.

Annie Mandlsohn has exhibited her artwork across Canada for over 30 years. She is the recipient of grants for art and art education from the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council. Annie has taught sculpture and mixed media at the Art Gallery of Ontario and has lived and worked in rural and remote regions of the country.

Robert J. Brodey is a Toronto-based writer and photographer, whose lust for new places has sent him around the world, writing and shooting for the likes of Street Kids International, Outpost Magazine, The Toronto Star, and The Houston Chronicle.
