Artist's Statement
Colour, light, the cycles of nature (so extreme in our climate), the beauty of the human form: these are the subjects that inspire my paintings. Naturalistic representation has never much interested me. I take, rather, a transformative approach that seeks to capture a purely subjective experience, a state of mind, an evanescent thought. In this respect my work owes as much to musical and literary influences as it does to visual stimuli. My aim is to suggest the extraordinary that lies just beneath the surface of the ordinary.

SOME BOYS I’D LIKE TO KNOW
Solo Exhibition for PRIDE 2013
Artworks by ALLEN SHUGAR
URBAN GALLERY June - July 2013
In celebration of Toronto Gay Pride 2013, Urban Gallery presents ‘SOME BOYS I’D LIKE TO KNOW’ -a retrospective exhibition, by Toronto artist Allen Shugar, which explores the mystique of the male figure as an object of attraction. While the artist uses oil-on-canvas to pay tribute to the history of art, the male subject matter is the artist's somewhat whimsical attempt to help redress the imbalance in western art that saw the female image come to predominate (particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries), and become the ideal and only gender thought "proper" to be represented in an erotically charged fashion.
Allen Shugar is a Toronto-born artist who discovered the joy of oil painting in his early teen years. Since then, the creative urge has led him to explore many areas of art and design, and he has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and jewellery maker. He also developed a unique method for reverse-painting on glass. However, having never recovered from his romance with the smell of turpentine, he returns faithfully to oil-on-canvas for his most personal work.
